For the past 80 years within BMSTU has been accumulated a great and unique experience in educating students with auditory disabilities and preparing them to become a high-level specialists, in demand in various fields.
There are several determining stages:
1934 — the first eleven students with hearing impairment were enrolled in BMSTU.
1934–1988 — inclusive training is being implemented in the higher education system of the USSR.
1992–1994 — educational and rehabilitation programs are being developed.
1994 — the main educational-research and methodical center of the Ministry of Education of Russia (GUIMC) was created within BMSTU.
1997 — educational programs of multi-level higher professional education for the students with disabilities are being elaborated and developed. They are based on the primary higher education programs adapted to the abilities of such students in order to master the educational courses and trainings while the system of the targeted rehabilitation support is to simplify their absorption and minimize the restrictions of studies and labor activity.
2001 — BMSTU hands in the international partnership of colleges and universities serving the higher education of students with hearing impairment — Postsecondary Educational Network (PEN-International). Work within the framework of this 10-year project with colleagues from the United States, Japan, China and other countries has allowed to create a universal scheme for organizing the educational process in all universities participating, including infrastructure, content and carrying out joint research and educational programs.
2004 — BMSTU gains status of the “Federal Head Center for the Training of People with Disabilities”.
2005 — PEN-Russia is formed under the PEN-International umbrella. BMSTU is joined by the Academy of Management “TISBI” (Kazan), Vladimir State University and Novosibirsk State Technical University.
2009 — the 75th anniversary of higher education of students with disabilities in Russia. The new type classrooms are installed in BMSTU — system-integrated information complexes, each of that is a functional module designed to solve specific tasks.
2014 — BMSTU participates in of city targeted programs implemented by the Department of Labor and Social Protection of Moscow City Population. These programs have allowed ensuring the quality education, the possibility of effective and rational employment as well as high socialization in society for the people with disabilities. Within the pre-university trainings the work is carried out for the vocational guidance of schoolchildren with disabilities and their inclusion in the competitive programs of BMSTU — Step for the Future, Cosmonautics. Winners of these programs are enrolled into BMSTU.
2015 — 5 of specialized multimedia classrooms are created in BMSTU where 77 automated working places for students with disabilities are available.
2016 — GUIMC students take part in Abilympics — a competition of professional skills among persons with disabilities and win in the nomination “Software Development” initially at the city-level and at national-level thereafter. The winner, a GUIMC student, Zenkovich Stanislav is sent to the international stage in France, where he takes the 4th place.
Later this year GUIMC organizes and conducts the national competition with international participation for the best project of scientific creativity among inclusive teams of educational organizations — the Unity Prize.
Also this year GUIMC wins and successfully fulfills the State contract for the project “Development and implementation of the training model and individual socio-psychological support for students with hearing impairment in the field of engineering, technology and technical sciences (bachelor’s level), which leads to advanced trainings of 344 employees of Russian universities.
2017 — GUIMC fulfills the State task on organizing public events in the sphere of education, science and youth policy in order to support the activity of resource training and methodological centers for the training of people with disabilities created on the basis of educational organizations of higher education. That leads to advanced trainings of 367 employees of Russian universities.
2018 — the delegation of the Tsukuba Technological University (Japan) headed by President Norio Okoshi visits GUIMC and extends the Memorandum of Cooperation between the two universities in the field of inclusive education for another 5 years.
Achievements & Innovations
- Development of the unique model of higher professional education for the students with disabilities: students are in separate groups within GUIMC on the first year, then being gradually integrated into the main student flow on the second year and after that finally joining the general educational groups of second year.
- An outstanding implementation of the general educational program for the students with hearing impairment: rehabilitation course “Technologies of professional and labor socialization” and further one-year prolonged studies to gain a bachelor, master or specialist degree. Post-graduate studies are also available either in BMSTU or in other universities.
- Efficient scientific, methodological, educational and practical, technological and personnel support of higher inclusive vocational education. For the last years there were written more than 70 articles, published up to 50 teaching aids and registered 10 patents and useful product certificates.
- Participation in local and international profile projects.
- BMSTU developments in the field of higher education of people with hearing impairment have formed the basis of the federal system of higher inclusive vocational education for people with disabilities.
Ongoing projects
- Adaptation of the basic educational software and their usage optimization in the context of inclusive education.
- An “an educational space of equal opportunities” project — providing accessibility of information and communication technologies as well as architectural adaptability for people with disabilities.
- Support of projects of social entrepreneurship in the field of solving problems of people with disabilities.
- Contribution to successful employment of graduates with disabilities.
- Conducting research in the field of information and communication technologies, health and life safety.
GUIMC in figures
2004 — the first major bachelors graduation, Informatics and Control Systems department;
The first graduation of engineers, Information security and Materials Science departments;
2006 — the first graduation of engineers, Computer-aided Manufacturing Automation Systems department;
2009 — the record entrance, 46 students enrolled;
2010 — the record graduation, 30 students from various departments finished the university;
2011 — the record amount (227) of students are studying within faculty;
2016 — the largest graduation in GUIMC history: 23 engineers, 25 bachelors and 2 masters.
